There is a need for adopting Presidential system of Government in Pakistan to get rid of British Parliamentary system bequeathed to us by our colonial masters with all its ills. The West minister type of government based on 51% votes, results in throwing up a party head like Mr. Zardari based on its party members who are beholden to him for being elected. The opposition with sizeable number of votes always tries to dislodge the sitting government unless there is an unholy alliance between the two. If we have a President elected by direct vote he could appoint his own ministers. A system could be worked out to elect a President belonging to a certain province by notation to safeguard smaller provinces. This would be more in line with the Islamic system of having a ruler responsible for unifying the country in contrast with the bickering of federal and provincial governments in all matters big and small, as has been our experience of past six decades.
