LAHORE As Pakistan is battling hard to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country with suicidal bombing escalating to key cities, about 180 US Cobra operatives including spies linked to notorious Blackwater agency have arrived secretly in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, and Quetta. Well-informed police sources close to the development revealed here on Monday that the undercover US intelligence operatives started arriving in the City a few days ago. About 650 US nationals, most of them linked with US Defence and security affairs, have been issued one-year multiple Pakistani visas by Pakistani Embassy in Washington in sheer violation of the prescribed rules. Sources also added that the Pakistani Embassy issued special multiple visas in haste without fulfilling the legal and diplomatic prerequisites. 'They are here to protect and promote US interests in the region, a top police source said, seeking anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue. Another dozens of Cobra operatives are likely to reach Pakistan during the next couple of weeks as the Pakistani Embassy in Washington has already issued them special protocol and multiple visas, sources added. The US operatives have arrived here under the pretext of providing security cover to US installations, few weeks after the twin suicide bombings at Data Darbar, which had left over 46 people killed. Sources believed that the visas were issued within last three weeks after recent visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke to Pakistan and after Islamabad was convinced with respect to the need for issuing visas to 'clear ways for assistance projects. They further said that Pakistans Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani issued special protocol visas to more than 600 security operatives including 200 US Marines shortly after he was given special powers by President Asif Ali Zardari to issue visas in Washington during his last months visit to Islamabad. Diplomatic sources while quoting American Embassy official in Islamabad also confirmed that as many as 400 Americans were issued Pakistani visas in the recent past. They asserted that hundreds of Marines are being deployed at locations in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Quetta to monitor developments with regard to US interests in the region. All the American operatives were issued one-year multiple visas, allowing them to leave and re-enter Pakistan without any further permission or clearance. Sources said that they would be also allowed to utilise green channel facility without any hindrance at all the airports of the country. 'This action of the government has put a question mark on the countrys sovereignty. The US intelligence operatives are being provided protocol at the airports while the Pakistanis have to face humiliating attitude at the hands of American officials in US, a senior politician commented, urging upon the government to reconsider its foreign policy before it is too late.
