ISLAMABAD - Chairman Federal Public Service Commission Malik Asif Hayat Friday called on the President Asif Ali Zardari at the Aiwan-e-Sadar and presented FPSC annual report-2012 to him.

Spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the report covers the functions, activities, observations and recommendations of the Commission for the last calendar year focusing on the recruitments carried out by the FPSC during 2012.

According to the report, the main responsibility carried out by the commission was to select about 240 officers of the Central Superior Services for which more than 14,000 candidates applied and more than 10,000 appeared for the examination. Only the best are selected to serve in positions of high responsibility. The report also mentions recruitment to technical and professional positions through an elaborate process involving examinations, tests and interviews. More than 134,000 applications were processed and after several stages about 1,000 candidates were recommended for appointment to different government departments, organisations and agencies. The commission also conducted final passing-out examinations of CSS probationers in 12 occupational groups and services.

FPSC Chairman Malik Asif Hayat on the occasion highlighted the role of the FPSC in maintaining a strict adherence to merit, while ensuring transparency and fair competition. He said as per the government's policy, equitable regional representation has also been ensured under quota policy of the government, which calls for participation from all provinces and regions.

The President appreciated the role being played by the FPSC in selecting competent and qualified persons for the public service. Emphasising upon merit-based selection and recruitment, the President said that the FPSC had a vital role to play in it. He also underlined the importance of the commission's work in advising the President and the government of Pakistan on matters relating to qualification for different posts in BPS-16 to BPS-22 and their methods of recruitment.

The President also appreciated Chairman Malik Asif Hayat, members and staff of the FPSC for pursuing with devotion their responsibilities towards merit-based selection and recruitment.
