ISLAMABAD - The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will launch electronic balloting system in the country next month by using the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in all categories of by-elections scheduled for September.

Sources seeking anonymity told The Nation on Tuesday that ECP is geared up to conduct by-elections on vacant seats of National Assembly, Provincial Assemblies and Local Governments by using the EVMs as part of its pilot project.

According to the sources, ECP Director General for Information Technology (IT) has assured the Commission that all by-elections scheduled for September will be held electronically. The Election Commission is in processing of procuring four hundred Electronic Voting Machines for its pilot project to conduct elections electronically.

Sources further said that ECP is in talks with the potential suppliers to cut the multi-million rupees deal latest by this month.

The Election Commission is making efforts including using technological solutions to ensure greater degree of transparency in the elections in the country.
