KARCHI - The inauguration Port Grand Retail and Entertainment Complex (Karachi Food Street), claimed to be the biggest food street of Asia, at Neti Jetty, has been postponed for the second time, TheNation learnt on Wednesday. The Port Grand is being built by a private company, on the land leased out by the Karachi Port Trust for 40 years. Initially, it was set to be inaugurated on August 14, last, but the management failed to fulfil its promise. Later, Federal Ports and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri, in a meeting with the media men in Ramazan, last, had announced that the inauguration of the Port Grand would coincide with Eidul Azha. However, the postponement of the Port Grand for the second time demonstrated that the food street will take a long time to become functional due to security concerns. It has been learnt that Port Grand Director (Operations) Shahrukh Khan has been absent from the country for the last 3 months that has also put a question mark on the success of the project. Moreover, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has not yet issued, or announced, any explanation in this regard, as it is liable to reason the delay in the opening of the project that has supposedly attracted billions in shape of foreign investment. The Port Grand is being developed at Neti Jetty and supposedly Pakistans only short-break food and fun destination which is offering an unrivalled selection of attractions for the whole family to enjoy together. KPT General Manager (Planning and Development) Brig Jamshed Zaidi, earlier told this scribe that it was supposed to be completed in 2007 but had been delayed for 2 years and the reasons were the old bridge, which was not sustainable, encroachers were not ready to vacate the place, Hindu community had also put the hurdles and were up to politicise the issue, but now it is ready. Similarly, while talking to TheNation, some three months back, the Port Grand Director (Operations) had told that about 12,000 to 13,000 people were expected to visit the grand fun land of the Asia which had been built at a cost of Rs2 billion. The best features of the Port Grand is the foreign investment as there are many companies which are opening their outlets and are coming to Pakistan for the first time, he added. He went on to say that this world-class attraction has been designed and developed by the leading US architects, 'Nework from New Jersey. There are the hinterland areas which are a must visit such as the Napiers Tavern, the Port House Galleria, or to get the sense of contemporary lifestyle at places like The Festival Boulevard, Garden Restaurant, Leos Loop, and the Bridge Art Lane. The visitors are to choose from more than 50 restaurants with an endless variety of ethnic and international style, cuisine, cultivating everything from Gourmet Food, a cheesy steak, to the award winning 'Nihari and 'Kebab. The 'Chaat or fries or 'Murgh Choolay are as important a part of Karachis street culture as the 'Rubri. There are Port House Galleria Mall, Food stalls/restaurants/different kiosks of international items with capsule lift, also a grand lobby with centrally air-conditioned and a Boat Quay Side which has stationary boat restaurants which will offer tantalising dishes and experience of a life time.
