RAWALPINDI - A recent car theft incident occurred in the jurisdiction of New Town Police Station has stamped the fact that area is fast becoming vulnerable to the nefarious activities of carjackers, while the concerned police high-ups are even reluctant to register such incidents.

Despite tall claims made by Rawalpindi Police of curbing car theft cases, the cases are increasing day by day and the jurisdiction of New Town Police Station has become a safe haven for car lifters where they have been showing their hands without any check of authorities.

Back-to-back car theft cases in the limits of New Town Police Station have multiplied peoples’ fear, who after loosing faith in subordinate officers, are now requesting to City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi to pay special attention towards his prime responsibility, that is the protection of life and property of citizens.

Nowadays, according to police sources, a new gang comprising young educated thieves is freely operating in the limits of New Town Police Station, where during the last five days they lifted 6 cars.  Astonishingly, the area police don’t bother to trace out the lifting cars, which shows that local police are backing the car thieves.

Sources told TheNation that in many cases the lifters lifted the well-protected cars even from people’s private garages or from well-secured parking lots. The recent daring car lifting case took place on Saturday when some unknown carjackers lifted a Mehran car bearing registration number RIA-267, Model 2011, parked in front of the house of a journalist, associated with leading national English daily, located in E-Block of the Satellite Town. The area falls under the limits of New Town Police Station, that nowadays in the grip of several gangs of car lifters.

The car was theft in the morning around 7:00am, and matter was immediately reported to the concerned police station. The duty officer as usual was reluctant to file the first information report of the incident. Till filing of this report, the FIR of the incident was yet to be registered.

Surprisingly, SP Potohar division, Chaudhry Anees, who is supposed to look after the affairs of this area, didn’t want to discuss the issue of growing car theft cases. As several attempts were made to contact him, even a text message was also dropped on his cell no (0300-5268055) requesting him that his point of view is required regarding increasing number of car theft cases but he didn’t bother to respond. After this attitude one can gauge, how much police are interested to halt growing car theft cases. Even an SP-rank officer is least bothered to discuss the car lifting cases with media and citizens.
