GUJRANWALA - The electioneering is over for the testing battle between the PML-N and PPP candidates in by election to the Punjab Assembly's constituency PP-92 as all is set for polling on Tuesday (tomorrow).

The contest will decide the fate of city's future politics and reveal the supremacy or dent in the rank and file of the ruling PML-N.

The police and administration have finalised security plan and declared 25 polling stations in different areas as sensitive.

The PML-N candidate Dr Muhammad Ashraf Chohan was disqualified from the constituency on having dual nationality by the apex court.

There are a total of 1,67571 registered voters, 97,509 male and 70,062 female while 111 polling stations have been set up across the constituency. The PML-N has fielded Muhammad Nawaz Chohan, brother of the ineligible former MPA while the PPP has brought forward its City President Lala Asad Ullah Papa while seven independent candidates are in the run. Interestingly Jamaat-e-Islami has announced boycott of the by election and displayed banners in the constituency, asking its members to stay away from the polling process. One of the independent candidates Mehr Muhammad Sarfraz belongs to a diehard PPP family but has quit the party on ticket issue.

He can prove be to the trump card for the PML-N candidate if he succeeds in inspiring voters of Hafizabad Road and its adjacent areas.

Mehr Family of the city mostly has had its sympathies with the PPP and anger of the family could ruin the ambitions of Lala family which could only be able to reach the Provincial Assembly in 1988 elections.

Former UC nazim Lala Asad Ullah Papa, predecessor of former PPP City president Lala Muhammad Idrees, is a hardworking party worker but failed to unite the party over portfolio issue and party high command also did not bother to solve differences among various groups of the party.

On the other hand, the PML-N extended all-out support to its candidate and MNA Hamza Shahbaz Sharif kept on visiting the constituency every week. Although MNA Usman Ibrahim did not back the party decision regarding award of ticket to Nawaz Chohan and remained isolated from the electoral campaign, the PML-N rank and file supported him wholeheartedly. The local political pundits anxiously await to see how many votes PML-N candidate Nawaz Chohan will bag from areas being resided by Insari family.

On the other hand, the police have divided the constituency into three sectors and six sub-sectors while 1,368 cops will perform duties under the supervision of 10 Superintendents and the SDPOs. The Gujranwala DCO has announced a public holiday in the city to ensure peace and participation maximum number of citizens in the polling for the by-elections.
