KARACHI - Provincial Minister for Social Welfare Shamim Mumtaz has said that job quota for special persons will be increased from 2% to 5% percent soon.

She said the Sindh Cabinet had approved the increase in job quota for special persons at its last meeting. In her message on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities falling on December 3, the provincial minister said that population of persons with disabilities was unknown due to a delay in the census. However, the 1998 census indicated that 2.4% of population had disabilities in the country. She said experts believed that the number of disabled persons was on the rise. She said that bomb blasts and terrorist attacks rendered thousands of people disabled in the country during the last 15 years.

 She urged philanthropists and the civil society to join hands with the government for the welfare of the disabled persons. She said that special persons had proved themselves in many fields and earned name for the country at the international level.

She said the Sindh government had taken steps for the welfare, training and education of persons with disabilities and the Sindh Assembly had approved the Sindh Differently Abled (Employment, Rehabilitation and Welfare) Act, 2014.
