US asked to share info, halt attacks

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari Monday said Pakistan would take action against the militants linked to Al-Qaeda and Taliban in Fata, if the US shares credible intelligence information, rather carrying out direct drone attacks that were counterproductive. "The US should stop missile strikes inside Pakistani territory and share intelligence about the militants. Direct attacks are counterproductive and causing anti-American sentiments in the region," sources quoted the President as telling the US Congressional delegation, which called on him at Aiwan-i-Sadr on Monday. The delegation included representatives John F Tierney, head of the delegation, George Miller, Chris Van Hollen, Chris Welch, Christopher Murphy and Ron Kind. Advisor on Interior Rehman Malik, Finance Advisor Shaukat Tarin, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nawabzada Malik Amad Khan, and US Ambassador in Pakistan Anne W Patterson were also present in the meeting. The sources disclosed that President also told the delegation that Pakistan would shortly share with India the findings of its probe into the Mumbai terror attacks, the sources added. Rehman Malik apprised the delegation of the regional security situation. He said Pakistani security forces were actively engaged on various fronts and the situation would be under government control. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has called for closer cooperation between United States and Pakistan in promoting peace, security and progress of the region. The Premier has also hoped that relations between the two states will move in a positive direction with the aim of working together to seek a regional approach to the problem of terrorism and extremism. The Prime Minister expressed these views while talking to the Congressional delegation which called on him. Pakistan-US relations including counter terrorism cooperation, situation in the region and issues of mutual interest were discussed. The Prime Minister also emphasised the need for a strategy focused on developmental issues, which would lead to socio-economic prosperity for the people of the region. He also informed the Congressmen of the unanimity that existed in all state institutions with regard to the challenges that confronted the government. The Congressmen spoke of their desire to work with Pakistan in all areas covering security and economic growth, including a broader outreach effort for the region. They assured the Prime Minister of their efforts to work for an early passage of the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) legislation. Online adds: Urging the need for financial support from US, President Zardari made it clear that handful of extremists cannot make country hostage at any cost. Sources told Online that during the meeting, the President made it clear to them that Pakistan has paid a heavy price in terms of life and property losses after becoming ally in war against terrorism. He made them realise that the war could not be won without the financial support of US. The sources said that President pointed to them that situation in Swat is not encouraging , adding, we have the will and ability to fight out terrorists urging we will use the strategy of minimum collateral damage. Zardari hoped that new US administration would work with Pakistan and make relations stronger. He told the delegation that he anticipates that US President Barrack Obama to take affirmative steps regarding Pakistan's problems. He said that Pakistan is moving swiftly in war against terrorism ,adding, every one must play a positive and constructive role in wiping out of the menace. Zardari further said that perpetrators behind Mumbai carnage will not be spared ,adding, Pakistan is cooperating with New Delhi thus will inform India regarding its investigations. He said that blame game on Pakistan must be stopped now. Meanwhile, Chief Minister NWFP Amir Haider Khan Hoti also met President Asif Ali Zardari. Hoti briefed President on various issues relating to security situation in Swat and govt steps , said the sources. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his assurance that govt will not hold talks with miscreants.
