LAHORE - District nazims along with PML (Q) top leadership decided on Monday to use all the means to protect the present local government system including the option to move the apex court. The nazims also did not rule out meeting with President Asif Zardari to safeguard the new local government system. Some 28 district nazims gathered at the Chaudhrys local residence on the invitation of Ch Pervaiz Elahi. The nazims briefed the former Punjab chief minister about the excesses committed by the PML (N)-led provincial government against them. They told the senior PML (Q) leader that false cases had been lodged against the nazims. They brought to the notice of senior party leadership how various government agencies including anti-corruption department have been following them. Some nazims also complained that the arms twisting on the part of provincial govt was meant to change their loyalties. Most of the district and town nazims belong to PML (Q) and are considered the bedrock of its political constituency. Pervaiz Elahi on this occasion decided to convene a meeting of the town nazims from all over the province to draw up final strategy on February 9. The district nazims will also participate in the proposed meeting. Pervaiz said that it was important to have all stakeholders on board before taking any initiative against the Punjab government. On this Pervaiz Elahi asked the provincial government to release development funds. He said that due to such petty tactics like stopping the flow of development funds had brought the development across the province to standstill. Pervaiz Elahi said that his party would never allow anybody to bring harm to the present local government system. Some nazims apprehended that the present government wanted to amend the local government system with an aim to reduce the powers of nazims. Pervaiz assured them that PML (Q) leadership would not hesitate to go to the Supreme Court if need be to protect the local government system against the onslaughts of the provincial government. Pervaiz Elahi also took the nazims into confidence over the PML (Q)'s engagement with the PPP leaders.
