KARACHI - The Sindh Assembly session, which is starting about 44-days long recess on Monday (today) is likely to witness the threat of protest from Opposition benches over delay in convening of session as government’s failure in constituting the Standing Committees and Public Accounts Committee.

Acting Speaker Shehla Raza will chair the Sindh Assembly session at 10 am on Monday morning with legislation from government side as well as resolutions and privilege motion of Opposition benches are on the agenda of today’s proceedings.

Two privilege motions submitted by the MQM’s MPA, one by Ms Sumita Afzal Syed, which stated that government delayed the convening of session in violation of the rule 28 of the rules of procedures of the Sindh Assembly and breach of privilege of the lawmakers of this august house.

However, Syed Khalid Ahmed of MQM also submitted another privilege motion against the delay in formation of the Standing Committees and Public Accounts Committee of the Assembly.

MQM’s MPA in his privilege motion stated that it is our prime responsibility to sit in the Assembly sessions and meetings of the Standing Committees to discuss and resolve public importance matters.

However, almost seven months have passed in the creation of new Assembly tenure but still no Standing Committees and Public Accounts Committee have been formed, which is a clear violation of the rules of the procedure of this Provincial Assembly of Sindh.

The expected criticism and protest by the MQM against the delay in the convening of Sindh Assembly session and not forming the Standing Committees would likely cause debate and exchange of arguments between the two sides in the session.

The two government bills-prevention of defacement of property bill 7, 2013 against wall chalking and establishment of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board are also part of today’s Assembly proceedings.

Meanwhile, the MQM is likely to take up its resolution against the Pakistan Protection Ordinance (PPO) promulgated by the Federal government last year in its drive to actively counter the ongoing terrorism incidents in the country.

The Treasury benches of PPP would likely to oppose the resolution, which may also cause pandemonium in the house.
