Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training Baleeghur Rehman said that government had started the a programme for the aid and welfare of the poor and disabled persons through “Khidmat Card”.

Under the programme, such persons will be taught skills so that they can be made able to earn their livelihood and do not rely on others. He expressed these thoughts while addressing a awareness programme held in coordination with Information Department Punjab, Islamia University of Bahawalpur and All Pakistan Newspapers Society.The minister said that it was the vision of Punjab chief minister that welfare work for the poor and disabled persons should be done, similarly the federal government has also doubled the amount of “Waseela” programme. He said that by the efforts of the government, improvement in the country is seen and incidents of terrorism are also reduced.

Channar said Khidmat Card Programme is the guarantee for their bright future and through this, the poor and disabled will be able to support themselves rather than being supported. He added that the CM took the revolutionary steps for the welfare of the deserving poor.He said that along with the government, the civil society should also participate enthusiastically in the welfare works for the poor and disabled persons . He said that disabled persons are not inferior to others in the mental capacity. All they need is a little attention to make them useful citizens, he added. He said that on divisional level, the project of establishing workshops for teaching skills to the disabled person is also under consideration. IUB Vice Chancellor Dr Qaiser Mushtaq said that facilities are being provided for pick and drop of the disabled students studying in the university from hostels or their homes to the university.

He added that ramps have been constructed in the university and considering the convenience of disable persons a special building is being constructed for them.

District Coordination Officer Imran Sikandar said that in District Bahawalpur, 2,500 disabled persons have so far been issued “Khidmat” Cards. He added that on directions of government, the new registration process of disabled persons is also in progress and until now almost 12,000 persons have been registered.

Social Protection Authority General Manager Shahid Farooq said that disabled and poor persons are being provided with Rs1,200 monthly. He added that poor and disabled persons should be made effective and active.
