LAHORE - The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) officials have distributed sweets to celebrate the Supreme Court decision on the dismissal of their ex-boss.

On Wednesday, Supreme Court (SC) dismissed Siddiqul Farooq from his chairmanship of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) on the grounds that he had exceeded his three-year tenure.

The celebrations began Thursday when former officials visited the board and greeted their incumbent staff on the SC decision. Former administrator Farhat Aziz, former secretary Javed Bashir, Uzma Shehzadi and Rana Tariq Javed, deputy administrator of Diyal Singh Trust Library were among who visited the board.

The bench had previously expressed serious reservations with the way Farooq had administered his responsibilities. The court directed the government to appoint a new chairman according to the law.

ETPB Secretary Abdul Qadeer has written a letter to federal government to appoint a new chairman.

According to ex-administrator Farhat, Qadeer’s appointment was too in violation of board rules. “Qadeer is an employee of House Building Finance Company (HBFC) and was serving in ETPB on a deputation basis and as per deputation rules, no one from other government department is eligible to be appointed on deputation basis in ETPB thus his letter was illegal.

When contacted, a spokesman for ETPB said the appointment of secretary was ‘on merit’.  Qadeer could not be reached for comment.
