Trash heaps question govt's performance

SIALKOT-Nauseating trash heaps in the residential, commercial and industrial areas leave a question mark on the performance of Municipal Corporation and Sialkot Waste Management Company.
The garbage causes ill-smell and suffocation besides creating environmental pollution in the city. Business, social, religious and political circles have expressed grave concern over this critical situation. They urged the officials concerned to ensure early lifting of trash heaps from all the parts of the Sialkot city and ensure their dumping in the outskirts.
They also urged the officials to ensure early repairing of the broken tractor-trolleys. The officials said that the people produce 400 tonnes of garbage daily.
PTI leaders Umer Dar, Usman Dar and Arif Ahmed Khawaja expressed grave concern over the uncleanliness in the city. They said that it was the prime obligation of the local bodies to provide better cleanliness facilities.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Bashir Ahmed said that the Municipal Corporation would soon establish trash and garbage dumping point in outskirts of Sialkot city. There is no proper trash dumping point in Sialkot.
He added that Sialkot lacked a garbage dumping point for the last several decades due to which the sanitation staff was facing great ordeal in dumping garbage. He said that the Municipal Corporation had allocated Rs170 million for establishing a dumping point as the officials have started searching suitable land for the purpose.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Farooq Naveed asked the officials to show good performance and play a key role in making the city clean. He said that SWMC should also make better planning and ensure early implementation of planning for cleanliness in active cooperation of the public.
The DC said that the purpose of establishing the waste management company was not only to lift the garbage from the trash points but also to ensure the proper dumping of the trash as per the principles of hygiene.
He said that the shopping and commercial plazas, housing societies and marriage halls ensure their cleanliness by lifting their waste with their own resources.
He asked the SWMC officials to form special teams to clean the city's internal and external roads. He said that the district administration would provide assistance for SWMC to keep the city clean.
