ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari Friday said that the prevailing tension between Pakistan and India should be de-escalated but only through meaningful dialogue. In a meeting with US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W. Patterson, who called on him at the presidency, the President told her that Pakistan had not received any positive signal from the Indian side. India should express its willingness by showing restraint to calm down the situation in the region, he mentioned. Sources privy to the meeting said that the US Ambassador informed the President about the US Government efforts to defuse the tension between Pakistan and India, which was in the interest of the whole region. The relations between the two nuclear arm South Asian states, Pakistan and India, deteriorated since the terror attacks on Mumbai, the financial hub of the country. Both sides put their forces on high alert and some forces build-up on sharing border between the two countries. The US Ambassador lauded Islamabad efforts to curb the militancy, and the military operation in the troubled Khyber Agency to restore the NATO supply line to Afghanistan through Khyber Pass. The supply line was restored on Friday and according to the political administration some 1500 vehicles carrying NATO containers passed through the said tribal agency. President Zardari told the US envoy that Pakistan had no aggressive design against any country and had demonstrated much flexibility after Mumbai terrorist attacks while now India should respond positively. The President pointed out that Pakistan had time and again offered India assistance in conducting the investigation into Mumbai terror attacks but no response had been received from the other side of eastern border. They also discussed the war on terror and escalating tension in the region. The President informed the US envoy about the government efforts on the western border along Afghanistan, especially the military operations in Bajaur and Mohmand tribal agencies. The President maintained that the government was against any sort of terrorism and would not allow the terrorists to succeed in their nefarious designs. The President acknowledged the role of Washington in reducing the tension between Pakistan and India. The US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Peterson while informing President Asif Ali Zardari about her country's efforts to defuse the tension between Pakistan and India said that both the countries should strengthen their mutual relations.
