LAHORE – Agriculture minister Malik Ahmed Ali has said that legislative process regarding pesticides, fertilizers and seed act would be completed soon in consultation with all stakeholders in the province.

Presiding over a high level meeting here on Wednesday, the minister said that after 18th amendment, agriculture was now a provincial subject and consultation with all stakeholders was continuing regarding agriculture legislative process in order to make it comprehensive, well-coordinated and effective, he added. Ahmed Ali said that effective steps were being taken to ensure provision of quality agriculture pesticides and fertilizers to the farmers. Reduction in adulteration had been made from 8.64 percent to 2.70 percent in agriculture pesticides and from 8.6 percent to 5.1 percent in fertilizer, he held. The minister said that as many as 1702 cases had been registered against persons involved in adulteration and substandard pesticides while spurious pesticides worth Rs43 crore, consisting of 911,000 litters had been confiscated. He said that 17 lakh, 27 thousand 914 kg spurious fertilizers, worth 36 crore, 25 lakh rupees had been also confiscated.

The minister formulated three committees of stakeholders for necessary amendment in Pesticides Ordinance, Fertilizer Control Order and Seed Act which will present their final recommendation within seven days after reviewing the existing laws in order to expedite the legislative process.
