MULTAN - Agriculture experts have advised farmers to apply water to their wheat crop timely to avoid production losses.
In a release issued by media liaison unit of Punjab agriculture department, experts said that lack of water application can affect supply of food ingredients to plants.
Experts, however, also advised farmers to apply water as per need pleading that excess water application can be counter productive. Scientists have found that lack of water at delicate stages hurt wheat production.
Wheat grown with low or middle level water application gives more production than wheat grown on excess water application and that is why wheat can also be grown in rain-fed areas. The factors that can affect wheat production included weather conditions, preparation of land, crop variation, availability of water, water resources and rain.
In time and need-based water application was a must to get higher wheat production, release concluded.
