LAHORE - Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif on Thursday ordered the inspector general police (IGP) Punjab to reopen all blocked thoroughfares in the provincial capital forthwith which were closed in the name of security. The chief justice observed, I appreciate that there should be security measures on those roads where the offices belonging to police department and other sensitive agencies are situated but facility of public at large should be seen first and given preference. Earlier, IGP Tariq Saleem Dogar appearing before the court placed a proposal to open closed roads only for light vehicles but the chief justice rejected his argument. Later on, the provincial police chief undertook that all possible facilities to the peoples of Lahore would be given on those roads, which had been closed for security purposes. After this, Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif disposed of suo moto proceedings and two connected writ petitions against the blockade of roads in the provincial metropolis. The hearing was held in the chamber as no unnecessary persons or media personnel were allowed to attend the hearing. CJ had taken suo moto notice of the situation after some reports were published in newspapers and summoned top police brass while observing that offices of the IGP, CCPO and SSP (Operations) had been turned into no-go areas in the name of security. The news report had mentioned that the road in front of the IGP office had been encroached beyond the footpath by placing cemented blocks while road between the Government College Ground and IGP office was blocked completely for the vehicles. Similarly, road leading to the Civil Secretariat from IGP office crossing between the buildings of Planning and Development and Special Branch was also closed up to the Secretariat crossing. Moreover, half of the road in front of the CCPO office from Rescue 15 building to the Chief Ministers House has remained blocked, as the vehicles can only use the Queens Road for reaching the Chairing Cross while the traffic coming from the Wapda House has been diverted on The Mall and they have to face a long journey along the Lawrence Garden, China Chowk, BISE Lahore and then turn from the Ganga Ram Hospital. The report further said one side of the road at the office of SSP Operations in front of Islamia College Civil Lines had also been closed completely including a portion in front of the district courts up to Government Muslim High School. All these constructions of the walls and erection of barriers on thoroughfares had created a great hazard for the citizens and they were facing due to the unwanted measures, the report asserted.
