KARACHI - Low gas pressure at Korangi Gas Power Station on Thursday resulted in prolonged loadshedding of 198-megawatt hours (MWH) throughout the metropolis. Speaking at a news briefing Jan Abbas Zaidi, chief operating officer (Distribution) said the total demand of the City was 2336 MW while the company had been supplying 2282 MW. He explained that acute shortage of gas was affecting power generation while the SSGC was fully cooperating to improve the situation. Khalid Javed, Executive Director Generation and Transmission, was also present on the occasion. Giving details of numerous faults in the distribution network, Zaidi said that overhead jumper at 132 KV Queens Road circuit had stopped working. On Wednesday evening, the Baloch Colony Grid caught fire with a result of serious damages to the control cables and three transformers. Speaking on the occasion, Khalid Javed said the existing transformers had completed their age. Transformer No 1 and 3 have been replaced by the new ones while work on transformer 2 was underway and these are expected to start normal functioning before Friday night, he added. Abbas Zaidi further said that there had been 32 cable faults during the past 24 hours. Blocks 2 and 8 of Federal B Area, Clifton, Sector 15/A-3 in Buffer Zone, Gulistan Joharand and Gadap Grid suffered from this fault. Malir, Murtaza Sub-Station in Landhi Industrial Area and PMT No 2 in Memon Goth Malir also faced technical problems. He informed that 14,500 cases for new connections were under process. Many domestic and commercial consumers had responded positively to KESCs request to get their sanctioned load extended according to addition of electrical goods. Zaidi appealed to the consumers to check their originally sanctioned load and find out whether they needed an extension. This would help the KESC to overcome the problem of overloading which causes faults in the distribution infrastructure, he added. To a question, Zaidi replied that the KESC was striving to enhance its power generation capacity. Besides making investment into power generation, more grid stations and feeders have also been added, he concluded.
