Two cops among four dead in bomb attacks

PESHAWAR - Two policemen were killed and four others including two passersby were injured as a result of a remote-controlled blast in Beri Bagh area on Thursday. Sources said that the incident occurred at a time when a police mobile van was on routine patrolling. When the police van Beri Bagh, some unknown militants blew it up with a remote-controlled device. The blast was so powerful that the police mobile was blown into pieces. Those who were killed included driver Shaukat and Alam Zeb while two passersby and Sub-Inspector Nusrat sustained critical injuries. All the injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital for emergency medical assistance. Soon after the blast heavy contingent of police and officials of the secret agencies rushed to the site and cordoned off the area. The commoners were stopped in order to avert any casualties in the likely follow-up blast. Police and officials of the bomb disposal squad also searched the surroundings to foil any other sabotage bid. Meanwhile, following the frequent attacks and remote controlled blasts in these sensitive areas, the City Police tightened up security in and around the city and launched search operation in the limits of Budhabera, Mattani and Yakatoot police stations. In the last three consecutive days, Peshawar police averted several sabotage bids as two days back they defused 80kg bomb planted in 2-D car while on Thursday police traded fire with militants, as a result of which one suicide bomber hurled hand-grenade and later blew himself up in Mashogagar area of Budhabera. Police seized three high-intensity explosive devices and heavy weapons from the vehicles. APP adds: Two persons were killed and five others injured when unknown miscreants hurled a hand-grenade on a butcher shop in Ghas Mandi area here Thursday. Police said that customers were buying meat when the criminals threw the grenade. As a result, Qayyum, a resident of Chaman Chowk and Fazal Rehman died on the spot while five others suffered injuries.
