Menace in our midst

Lahore is a multi-cultural city which also happens to be the most happening of our countrys metropolitan spaces. But it is under a dire threat from extremist elements at present. In the aftermath of massacre of Ahmediya community in Lahore, there have also been some subsequent attacks on Ahmedi businesses here because of which all minorities feel alienated. The more recent attacks on CD shops at Hall Road indicate that a Talibanization of our society is underway. A similar pattern was observed in Swat where Taliban had begun to exert their influence with actions like this. They first attacked the minorities which are usually the most vulnerable target of any community. The attack on CD shops in Lahore is a signal that the menace has arrived. The government needs to act swiftly as the Punjabi Taliban are no more an NGO fantasy. They exist and are operational. -AHMED ALI, Islamabad, June 30.
