KARACHI - Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) couple of days ago named a six-member team for Davis Cup tie against South Korea. Inclusion of a doctor in the team has raised doubt about the fitness of a player or of more than one player in the squad which was named after training and trials held at the PAF complex in Islamabad. Only one player Aisamul Haq, who is part of the team, did not attend the training held prior to trials to select two players to the team. He was in England playing in doubles and mixed doubles event of Wimbledon Tennis. However, he chose to remain in England and informed the PTF that he would fly to South Korea straight from London to join the team which play the three-day fixture from July 8. Last time when Pakistan met South Korea on their own soil and grassy courts, they won 3-2 at Lahore. Dr Awais of PSB has been picked to travel with the team. Usually the host country provides all the medical facilities including specialists and a doctor but Pakistan has preferred to send its own doctor. It is not known which player would need special treatment due to which the PTF selected a Pakistani doctor. Any other doctor could take care of injuries but a home doctor is needed when a player prefers to be treated behind the door. It is speculated that the doctor has been picked to specially look after Aisamul Haq who is usually suffer cramps during the Davis Cup matches in which he had to play two singles and a doubles. Pakistans top player is so much under strain in playing singles which he does not play at international level that he suffers cramps. Aisam would be reaching South Korea directly from cooler weather of London where he was playing in the Wimbledon for the last 10 days. In London, he was playing on grass. However, the competition against South Korea would be played on hard Deco turf II. All the four South Koreans who have been picked to play against Pakistan have ITF singles ranking though very low but none of the four Pakistanis have singles ITF ranking not even their top star Aisamul Haq who concentrates on double events at international level and plays singles when playing for Pakistan in Davis Cup team. The South Korea team nominations are: Young Jun Kim ITF singles ranking 373, Kyu Tae Im ITF ranking 479, Yong Kyu Lin ITF ranking 506, Hyun Joon Kim ITF ranking 837. Pakistani team is: Aisamul Haq, Aqeel Khan, Yasir Khan, Samir Iftikhar. M Khalid is non playing captain and Dr Awais doctor with the team.
