LAHORE - A team nowhere in favourites, Rawalpindi Rams stole the show staged in Faisalabad under the sponsorship of Faysal Bank Super Eight National Twenty20 Cup, who is organising this event since 2008, after beating favourite Karachi Dolphins in a Super over thriller. Unlucky Karachi Dolphins reached the final five times but they failed to break defeat jinx. Rawalpindi Rams held their nerves and scored 16 runs in Super over and gave 17 runs target for victory to Karachi Dolphins. Sohail Khan, the best bowler of the tournament, failed to deliver for his team. On the other hand, Raza Hassan restricted Karachi Dolphins to just seven runs and got one wicket while Rameez Raja was dropped of his bowling. Shahzaib Hassan played three deliveries but failed to open his account against tight spin bowling of Raza Hassan. Before the start of the tournament, Tanvir Sohail while talking to this scribe from Faisalabad had said they have inexperienced team but the team will give tough time to the opponents. He stood to his words and after losing in the first game at the hands of Karachi Dolphins, the Rawalpindi Rams never looked back and improve their performance in every game. Rawalpindi defeated favou-rites Faisalabad and Multan in their pool matches and then outplayed defending champion Lahore in the semi-finals. On the other hand, Karachi Dolphins defeated favourite Hyderabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi Rams to play semi-finals against Sialkot Stallions. On the final that was started nearly 30 minutes late due to overnight and morning rain, every one was of the view that Karachi will easily win the title with the help of strong batting and finest pace attack of the tournament. At one stage when Karachi had scored 92 runs in 10 overs against Rawalpindi that the Dolphins will pile up a mammoth total but their plans were spoiled by Rams skipper Sohail Tanvir. He marshalled his troops intelligently that help Rawalpindi to restrict Karachi to 164 in the allotted 20 overs. Sohail's timely changes bore fruit and Karachi could manage 164 runs. Rawalpindi Rams started their innings under game plan prepared by coach, manager and captain. Opener Awais Zia started offensive game that jolted the opponents and Tanvir Ahmed who made early breakthrough in his first over failed to get any wickets while from the other end Sohail Khan continued his fiery spell and got four wickets. Rawalpindi Rams changed their plan after the departure of Awais Zia and Sohail Tanvir as Umar Amin blocked one-end up while from the other end new batsmen maintained their run rate. Hammad Azam scored quick fired 23 runs of 12 deliveries. He was bowled by Sohail Khan while playing a lofty shot, the ball took inside edge and went on to the stumps. After Hammad departure Umar Amin started firing and till 15 overs they were well on way to chase the target but two quick wickets changed the position of match. In the fourth ball of the final over Umar Amin equalled the score (164/8) but two quick wickets one of Samiullah who caught at shot cover of the bowling of spinner and Hassan Raza stumped by Sarfaraz while playing big hit off the same bowler. A large number of crowds thronged themselves with families to witness the match and enjoyed superb contest. The presence of a much big crowd shows that they love cricket-and they are not terrorist now its time ripe for International Cricket Council to compel foreign team to visit Pakistan as the Pakistanis love cricket and want international cricket in their country in the Future Tour Programme, if any team refuses to tour Pakistan then the team should be dealt accordingly. Rawalpindi Rams coach, manager, captain and team congratulated on their unique achievement as they made to final and won the final in thrilling way. Earlier, prior to start of the final, the President and CEO Faysal Bank promised to continue promotion of cricket at the grass-root level. "We want to introduce this tournament in smaller cities like Hyderabad, Okara and Multan and also to those cities which were pinpointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board," he concluded.
