The Sialkot administration and the Public Health Engineering Department have failed in providing potable water for the people.

The people have been suffering from waterborne diseases due to the prolonged usage of the contaminated water being supplied by the TMA through rusted pipelines. The water being supplied to the residents has already been declared contaminated and unhygienic by the Public Health Engineering Department and the Health Department.

Officials said that the underground water supplying pipelines in most parts of the city had become rusted and broken due to which the underground sewerage water get mixed with the water supplying pipeline due to which the situation has become alarming.

The TMA has put the responsibility on the shoulders of the tanneries in Sialkot, saying that these tanneries had polluted the underground water to a great extant. They said that tanneries in and around Sialkot city has also made the underground water poisonous by the continuous release of chemicals by these tanneries.

The Health Department has already declared the water of both of Govt Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital and Govt Sardar Begum Memorial Teaching Hospital Sialkot contaminated.

According to the District Health Officer Dr Javaid Warraich, the department had got examined the water samples these hospitals and fifteen other water filtration plants and tube wells at the union council level.

When contacted, TMO Muhammad Zafar Qureshi said that the admin was striving to provide to provide potable water for the inhabitants, adding that the filters of water plants were changed after every three months. He claimed that a sum of Rs6 billion was direly needed to ensure provision of clean water to the people in Sialkot city.

He said that if the Punjab government provides the needed the funds, the TMA would take a period of next five years to solve the problem. There is also a dire need to replace all the rusting and broken water supply lines in Sialkot, the TMA officials said.
