Outdated ideas

It was interesting to know that PML-N is taking up Ring Road project with new changes, the total cost exceeding Rs 85b now. The transport and communication revolution is a major achievement that has paved the way for the present prosperity of western industrialised countries. It was a vision their leaders had seen two centuries back, laid down a foundation of underground railway network for all their major cosmopolitan cities, making subsequent changes as science and technology progressed, from time to time. Besides common commuters even millionaires travel the luxury metros, subways, tubes etc. The service is rapid, economical and available 24 hours. The cities are thus free of traffic congestion, pollution and noise. The countries of the far east-Japan, Korea, China and others followed these ideas too and are now in parallel competition with their principals. Our leaders, however, do not seem to buy these ideas and have come out with their own contraptions. The idea of an underground railway network is pretty out-dated but that is what our leaderswant to do. -MASHKOOR A. KHAN, Murree, via e-mail, May 21.
