Supervisory mechanism

Aleena Naqvi says that where were these judges when Musharraf took over? Justice Daudpota once said why the judges alone are expected to oppose military take over when the whole nation is rejoicing at the event. When people were welcoming Musharraf should the judges have resigned and gone home? On her second point about 'roti, kapr, makan', a country needs a supervisory mechanism unconnected with the government. This is universally known as 'external audit'. Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary would have taken suo moto notice or acted on a petition by a concerned citizen, summoned officials of the food department and got to the bottom of the problem to forestall the wheat crisis. He would have questioned government's decision to export wheat etc. The progress of a country is dependent on investment, local and foreign, in industry, agriculture, in trade etc. The first thing the investor wants to know is whether he will get protection from the courts in case of a dispute and that he will not be at the mercy of various government departments. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore Cantt., via e-mail, May 19.
