KARACHI - A robust growth of 52.57pc has been witnessed in the export of cement during ten months of current financial year 2008-09. According to the official data, the export of cement reached $470.105 million during July to April 2008-09 against $308.129 million in the same period of last financial year 2007-08. The total export of cement at Karachi Port Trust was recorded at 30,86,025 tonnes during the fiscal year 2008-09, The Nation learnt. According to data available, 2,54,789 tonnes cement was exported in July last year, 3,14,333 tonnes in August, 2,68,414 in September, 3,41,622 tonnes in October, 3,42,981 tonnes in November and 1,90,264 tonnes in December 2008 was recorded, while 3,32,888 tonnes in January this year, 329,822 tonnes in February, 347,454 tonnes in March, and 363,458 tonnes in April. The cement manufacturers expected expansion of cement exports above $500 million in current FY2008-09 against $354 million of last FY2007-08 and are hoping to reach Middle East, Africa and other countries. 8.073 MT has been exported during the ten months of current financial year against 5.742 MT of last year. It has been observed that major exporters of cement like China, India and Egypt had stopped exporting cement by dint of increased demand in their own countries and that provided Pakistan a chance to capture the maximum export potential. The official statistics of foreign trade showed that the cement exports had shot up to $50.089 million in August of current fiscal 2008-09 against $26.228 million of same period of last fiscal 2007-08.
