LAHORE - The Pakistan junior hockey team left for Malaysia on late Tuesday night to take part in the 9th Junior World Cup Tournament. The World Cup will be co-hosted by Johor Bahru Malaysia and Singapore from June 7 to 21. In all, 20 teams are taking part in the event which are divided into four pools. The Pakistan team is in pool A along with defending champions Argentina, Russia, Belgium and Egypt. Pakistan will play its first pool match against Russia on June 7, second match against Egypt on June 8, third match against Argentina on June 11 and last pool match against Belgium on June 12 at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. In case of qualify in the second round Pakistan will play its three matches in Singapore. The Pakistan team also had the morning practice session on Tuesday. The national selection committee has already announced 20 players for the tournament. Team management with the consultation of selection committee will announce final 18-member squad after the warm up matches. The announced 20 players are Imran Shah and Imran Butt (Goal Keepers), Muhammad Ateeq, Kashif Ali and Amir Shahzad (Full Backs), Muhammad Irfan, Fareed Ahmad, Muhammad Rashid, Mohsin Bilal, Sibtain Raza (Half Backs), Waqas Sharif, Shafqat Rasool (Captain), Abdul Haseem Khan (VC), Abbas Haider, Muhammad Zubair, Inayat Ullah, Muhammad Rizwan, Muhammad Taufeeq, Hassan Akhtar and Azlan Khan (Forwards). Khawaja Muhammad Junaid will be the head coach, while coach Danish Kaleem, Goal Keeping Coach Ahmad Alam, Dr. Asad Abbas Shah and Physio Faiz Ur Rehman will also part of the team management. Coach Khawaja Muhammad Junaid said before departure that the players are in good form and the team also has the potential to surprise any team. Pakistan last won the world Cup in 1979 and we are very much hopeful to achieve our target. If the players deliver at the right time in the game then we can win the title. Captain Shafqat Rasool said that they are preparing for this event for the last three months and winning the two tournaments in March will be an edge for the players. He hoped that Pakistan will produce good results in the tournament.
