Lyari gang war crops up again; 8 killed

KARACHI A fresh wave of violence gripped the City as eight people were killed in different areas of Lyari, while unidentified armed men launched an attack on Bughdadi police station with the hand grenades and rocket launchers on Wednesday. The situation in Lyari turned tense when the decomposed body of man namely Allah Bux alias Ali, affiliated with Ghaffar Zikri group was found from the Edio Lane three days ago. Three days after this incident, unidentified people attacked Lyari Peace Committee office in Eido lane area. Ghaffar Zikri group alleged that the victim Allah Bux alias Allo was killed by the Baba Ladla group. In revenge, his group attacked Lyari Peace Committee office. During the attack, two middle-aged men Saqib Pathan and Shahjahan sustained bullets injuries. They died before reaching the hospital. They belonged to the Shaid Rehman group. Following the incident, heavy firing shots were heard in different areas of Lyari including Eido Lane, Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road, Kamila Stop, Maulvi Road, Chakiwara, Kala Kot and Bughdai. During the gun battle, at least six people were killed and four others injured. The injured were admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment. Senior Medico-Legal Officer of the Civil Hospital Dr Aftab Chunar confirmed that four bodies were brought to Civil Hospital while one succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Dr Noor Ahmed, officer on-duty at Civil Hospital said the unidentified killers fired shots at close range. A source said the bodies of two more people could not be brought to Civil Hospital as their heirs buried them in the local graveyard. The victims were identified as Kamal, son of Jehangir, Shah Jahan, Saqib Ali alias Saqib Pathan, son of Muhammad Alam, Abdul Aziz alias Ali Baloch, son of Lal Muhammad, Shahid alias Dhobi, Rashid Bangal,i son of Muhammad Ali and Shah Husain alias Shaho. It is said that all the victims belonged to Layri gang and died during the 18 hours gun fight between Ghaffar Zikri group and Baba Ladla group. DIG Police South Zone Iqbal Mehmood while talking to the media said the police have launched a house-to-house search operation. He claimed that police have captured the house of Ghaffar Zikir. He added that 14 APCs of police and 50 vehicles along with four APCs of Rangers are taking part in the Lyari operation. The source in the Rangers informed The Nation that two people belonging to Lyari gang have been arrested while the full operation is scheduled for the night between Wednesday and Thursday. It is pertinent to mention here that the two top Lyari gangsters had reconciled with each other after a lengthy gang war that had claimed hundreds of lives during the last few years and after that, there was no bloodshed in Lyari. After Wednesday bloodshed in Lyari, routine and commercial life in the town remained paralysed. A Lyari resident while talking to The Nation said the area looked like Gaza strip. Our people, our children were not safe from the hands of culprits. No one knows who would be gunned down without any reason, he added. Shops and markets remained closed in Lyari after the bloodshed. It may be noted here that the gang war that began in 2003 has claimed over 2,000 lives.
