LAHORE-Following the resignation of Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan, the PPPs top leadership is in a dilemma over appointment of partys new Punjab President. Though there is no dearth of able politicians in the party, the problem is that all eligible persons who could be assigned leadership role in Punjab are already holding important portfolios in the govt. The most suitable politicians for the slot like Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Qamar Zaman Kaira are holding important official portfolios and it would be difficult for the party leadership to withdraw them from their current assignments, especially when two are also unwilling to accept any position in the party organisation. The PPPs Co-Chairman, Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday appointed Mohsin Ilayas as Incharge Central Secretariat, PPP, relieving Ch Manzoor of the responsibility. It is being considered as an indication that Ch Manzoor, a politician from Kasur, would be the next Punjab President, but many believe that he is not fit for the job as party needs a dynamic person to lead the party in a province fast becoming a stronghold of the PML-N. This is true especially in case of north and central Punjab where PPP is gradually losing ground vis--vis the PML-N. Party insiders say that new Punjab President would be facing the tough challenge of galvanising the party, and as such, a person of high political calibre should head the party to meet the set targets. Many believe that selection of new Punjab President would be a difficult decision for the partys top leadership as until now many towering personalities like Sheikh Muhammad Rashid, Malik Miraj Khalid, Sheikh Rafique Ahmad, Jehangir Badr, Rana Shaukat Mahmood , Fakhar Zaman, Jehangir Badr, Rao Skinder Iqbal, Qasim Zia, and of late Shah Mahmood Qureshi have led the party in Punjab. So far, the names of Qamar Zaman Kaira, Ch Manzoor, Senior Punjab Minister Raja Riaz, Finance Minister, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira and Navid Ch are making rounds in party circles as probable candidates for the coveted slot. Till some final decision by party leadership, PPPs Punjab General Secretary, Samiullah Khan has been asked to perform duties as Punjab President.
