In his inaugural address, US President Barack Obama talked of 'remaking America' and said to the Muslim world, "we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect". The hatred for Bush and the unpopularity of US policy over the last 8 years has been hugely damaging for the 'freedom and democracy' brand of America. Many hope Obama to be the saviour that changes America's present war-mongering image in the world. However, these people failed to realize that America is not one man. America is represented by its multifarious institutions that have compromised the very principles they claim to uphold. The weakness of America's capitalist system is well exposed now. One man can never change the problems that are systemic in a state, no matter how earnestly or eloquently he pledges to do so. America is a capitalist state with a capitalist foreign policy and that policy, basically, is to colonize other states. I think America would seek to maintain its domination of the Muslim world and continue with its agenda of exploitation even in the Obama era. Presidents come and go, policies may be amended a little, but there will be no real change. Muslims should look beyond the personality and evaluate the declared policies. Despite criticising George Bush's foreign policy, Barack Obama has declared his willingness to attack Pakistan and intensify the war in Afghanistan. He has also pledged unstinting support for the brutal Israeli occupation of Palestine. -MOEZ MOBEEN, Islamabad, via e-mail, February 11.
