LAHORE - The PPP on Monday took out a mammoth peace rally in the City to condemn desecration of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto's monument in Rawalpindi allegedly at the hands of PML-N workers, and to support policies of President Asif Ali Zardari and Governor Salmaan Taseer. The rally led by PPP's Punjab President Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan, secretary general Sami Ullah Khan and party's Lahore President Ch Muhammad Asghar, started from Data Darbar and culminated at Governor's House, where PPP leaders addressed its participants. The peace rally was organised by party's Lahore organisation, as all party wings in the City including those of labour, youth, lawyers and students participated in large number. Party workers from all 25 provincial constituencies also ensured their presence on the occasion. A big procession of lawyers led by former vice president Lahore High Court Bar Association, Saiful Malook and senior lawyer Aamir Hussain Hashmi joined the rally at GPO crossing on The Mall. Punjab Assembly members belonging to the PPP including Sajida Mir, Azma Zahid Bukhari, Sagheera Islam and Farooq Yousuf Ghurki were also part of the rally. The participants were carrying placards, party flags and were chanting slogans in the favour of party leadership. "Qadam barhao Asif Zardari hum tumharay saath hain", "Zinda hai BB zinda hai" and "Taira veer maira veer-Salmaan Taseer, Salman Taseer" were the slogans most frequently raised by PPP workers during the gathering. According to a rough estimate over 10,000 people participated in the rally which took around four hours to reach Governor's House. Addressing the rally at Governor's House, PPP's Punjab president Rana Aftab Ahmad said that those opposing Governor's Rule in Punjab had forgotten the time when they also had imposed Governor's Rule in Sindh for 11 months during their tenure of govt. He said PPP government had given free hand to PML-N to take out procession and did not resort to arrests considering it their democratic right. Condemning desecration of BB's monument in Rawalpindi, the PPP leader termed PML-N workers' reaction uncalled for, saying that they should not test PPP's patience. The next PPP rally, he warned, would start from Data Darbar and may culminate at Raiwind residence of Sharif brothers if the PML-N leaders did not change their attitude. In their address, PPP's Lahore president Ch Muhammad Asghar and secretary information Aamir Hussain Hashmi said that PPP workers would confront the PML-N workers on all fronts if they continued to show disregard for PPP leadership. They said people would see a PPP govt in Punjab in the near future. Other party leaders including Auranzeb Burki, Aslam Gill and Sajida Mir also addressed the rally.
