The present government has ordered re-instatement of over 7000 employees with a lot of publicity and fanfare. They were sacked in 1997 by Nawaz government for being political appointees that were appointed without merit. Providing jobs to jobless people is good but the public should be told who these people are and did they actually remain jobless for all of these 12 years since their sacking? The reinstatement means that they would get arrears of 12 years, which would run into billions of rupees. The political appointees normally do not fulfill the criteria of the job. They are usually parasites and troublemakers transplanted in their respective departments to snitch. The public has a right to know whether the vacancies against which these people were appointed still existed or they have just been stuffed over and above the requirement of the staff. Employing about 7000 over and above the existing numbers on payroll will be a big drain on the exchequer. It is also quite likely that most of them might already be settled in some other jobs somewhere and would now be joining only to collect their arrears and monthly salaries. The government needs to clarify its position on the issue. -MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, via e-mail, February 9.
