LAHORE - The Pakistan Davis Cup team led by non playing captain Rashid Malik left here on Monday night for Oman to play the quarter-final of the Asia Oceania Group-II. To return to the to in the group, the Pakistan tennis federation has once again turned towards Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan while Jalil Khan and Yasir Khan other members of the team, who were selected from a group of selected players called for the trials early last month. Another member Jebran Mahmoodi, who too was selected was held back out of the camp due to illness and was not sure till the filing of the report weather he is traveling for the tie or not. The team was to travel to Oman a day before the tie but on the request of Malik their travel was rescheduled for Monday. Pakistan in its previous ties lost to Philippines and Asia Pacific with an identical score of 2-3. Then Aisam was not part of the Pakistan squad and Malik did not know the reason because he too was not the skipper then. Had I been the captain I would have got commitments from him prior to the schedule of the ties, said Malik in an informal chat. If was the captain then I would have assured his participation for Pakistan, he added. Malik was of the point of view that the tie against Oman want be easy. When you are playing even against the weakest team in its home courts they are hard to beat. The reason being that they are not only playing against them but against an alien crowd. The same would be the case here, we have worked very hard for the tie but playing Oman in its backyard in front of their crowd would be very difficult a task to achieve. But I am confident to achieve the goal and hopefully was have Aisam and Aqeel in the line-up. Because he (Aisam) has been in touch with the game in the Futures Tours otherwise the timeframe given to us to train was too shot. The camp assembled on February 18 here we are leaving now. It were hardly two weeks and I would suggest the camp for the Davis Cup team should be at least for four weeks to get better results, Malik said. I am hopefully we will win and that would give us the call and here too I would ask the federation to start its endeavour to schedule the tie in Pakistan. If we were able to play in Pakistan then the matches would be on grass and to our advantage we would come out triumph. The next tie most probably would be against Philippines because it will be playing Hong Kong, which is a weak team. He further asked the federation to organize camps of junior players like Tanveer, Hira, Faizan, Waqas, Sadanul Haq so that they could be prepared for the future. I think now is the time to put such players in camps for results possibly by 2012. I have been pleading time and again to select talented players for training to replace Aqeel and Aisam. With growing age for how long these two players would survive the international matches pressure. If the federation take the advise of the professional players, I am sure we will go to the group-I by the end of this year, added Malik. Returning to the tie against Oman, he said that he would surely try to give international exposure to Yasir and Jalil after there is a dead rubber.
