MIRPUR (AJK) A group of special children from AJK have qualified for the forthcoming national Olympics after they secured overall first position in the three-day Regional National Olympics-2010 held at Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad, it was officially announced here. A 23-member group of special children (athletes), besides five officials from the local institutions of special education participated in the Regional Special Olympics. Disclosing this, Dr. Amjad Insari, Director Kashmir Institute of Special Education, Mirpur and coordinator for the participant special children from AJK in the Regional National Olympics told TheNation here Tuesday that there were bright prospects of participation by special children from AJK in the national squad of Pakistan for rally race, long jump and 100-meter race. Thus the representation of AJK in the coming World Special Olympics to be held in Athens have also ensured, he said. It was for the first time that special (handicapped by any way) children from AJK will participate in the Regional Special Olympics being held in Islamabad to demonstrate their sport skills and talent in any national level event of games, said Dr. Amjad Insari. Those special children participating in the Olympics belonged to various educational institutes. They include two athletes including Mehwish Iftikhar and Qaiser Zameer from Kashmir Institute of Special Education, eight athletes from Dar-ul-Zeenat and 13 athletes from Bright Horizon Mangla, he said He said that these groups of special athletes took part in 50, 100, 200 and 400-meter race besides rally race, standing jumps and long jumps in the scheduled special Olympics. Elaborating the successes attained by the special children from AJK in the Regional Special Olympics with distinctions,. Dr. Amjad Insari said that the special athletes participated in a total of seven games. They attained first eight, second 14 and third 17 positions in the regional Olympics. The entire team of AJK got a total of 51 prizes, he said and added that thus special children from AJK established a new record in regional Olympics. Qaiser Zameer Butt and Mehwish Iftikhar of Kashmir Institute of Special Education secured first position in 100-meter and 50-meter race. Amaar, Aliya, Bakhtawar Nouman and Nazmeen of Bright Horizon Institute of Special Education also secured first position each. Seven special athletes from Darul Zeenat secured second position in the Olympics, he added. The 23-memebr team of special athlete children from AJK was accompanied by their instructors including Shamila Rafique, Safiya Akhter Noureen, Saddaf and Zulfiqar Ali.
