ISLAMABAD - Swedish Ambassador, Ulrika Sundberg paid a courtesy visit to Acting President Farooq H Naek here on Tuesday at the Parliament House and discussed ways and means of closer collaboration between Pakistan and Sweden. During the meeting the Acting President Farooq H Naek briefed the ambassador about the consistent policy of Pakistan for the uplift and wellbeing of minorities in the country through their full representation in democratic institutions and participation in national life. The Acting President also remarked about the meritorious services of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for interfaith harmony among different religions at world level and added that the present government was taking concrete measures for realisation of that ideal of great martyred leader. Farooq H Naek emphasised that for the first time in the history, a full-fledged Ministry for Minorities under a Federal Minister from minorities has been established. The Acting President also informed the ambassador that the government had reserved five percent job quota for minorities in federal government and August 11 was declared as 'Minoritys day in Pakistan. The Acting President also added that the proposal of reserved seats in the Senate was being considered and the PPP government had already given two seats to minorities in the Senate. Naek also emphasised for the development and requisite changes in 'Humanitarian Law to make it more effective. Ulrika Sundberg was all-praise for Pakistan and congratulated the govt on its contributions for minorities and interfaith harmony 'outstanding and unique in whole Islamic world and assured the full support of her country in these efforts. During the meeting, it was observed that Pakistan and Sweden both perceived terrorism and extremism as the common enemies of humanity and recognised the need to intensify efforts for combating these scourges collectively to make this world a more secure place to live. The Acting President apprised the visiting ambassador of the fact that the on-going operation against terror had full backing of the countrys Parliament, media and civil society had expressed the confidence it would culminate in complete elimination of terrorists outfits. He appreciated the role of Sweden in supporting Pakistan in the global fight against terrorism and humanitarian assistance provided by Sweden for the victims of earthquake and IDPs due to the law enforcement operation. He also lauded the role of Sweden in the forum of Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FODP) and its role during the Presidency of the EU for facilitating Pakistans deeper engagement with and enhanced market access to the countries of European Union. Farooq H Naek appreciated the role of Swedens Parliament for assisting Pakistan in getting excess to Scandinavian markets and hoped its continued pro-active role in strengthening the relations between the two countries.
