Lack of public transport

Stand on the edge of Kashmir Highway or drive from one end to the other and have a look and you would find hordes of people men and women, students and the elderly waiting for public transport and desperately waving for a free lift all the way from G-14 down to National Convention Centre. So who is to be blamed? Its a pity that an NGO has come in to fill the gap but not the government that is always in deep slumber until someone tries to prick its conscience for the wretched commoners. Can two buses run by the NGO act as a substitute for a modern transport system for millions of citizens? While the residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are suffering especially the entire belt of residents of G-sectors and also those working in H-sectors, the government must either come with sufficient buses and vans for the commuters or must allow the private sector to move in and start operating vehicles on busy routes. I wish to draw the attention of the high ups to kindly give permission to private transporters to immediately start new routes exclusive for the residents of G-sectors on the side of Kashmir Highway at least from G-14 sector down to the tip of G-5 near National Convention Building. Kashmir Highway (a stretch of barren straight line of around 15-20 kilo meters exclusive for rich car owners to zoom through throwing dust in the face of lower middle class people should be provided with decent public transport facilities. New route permit exclusive for Kashmir Highway will have following positive effects. It will relieve motor traffic and relieve pressure on the private transport. A big majority of car owner would have the option to leave their cars in the garage and switch over to comparatively cheaper public transport. It will also reduce pressure on budget for the lower middle income group (with college/university going students heading for educational institutes based in Sectors H8, H9, H10, H11 H12 and H13). I dont think the government or the leadership is aware of an average family of four with a income Rs.10,000 spending around half of their income for transport. Z. AWAN, Islamabad, March 2.
