500 Christian families set up tents in H-9

ISLAMABAD- Grabbing the vacant land allotted to different government departments in the federal capital, around 500 Christian families have set up tents in Sector H-9, forming a katchi abadi (slum) with the alleged backing of MNA Akram Masih Gill.A shop has also been erected in the settlement to facilitate the land grabbers while officials of Capital Development Authority (CDA) are playing the role of silent spectators. The dwellers of the tents said they were not living there for free. They said they were keeping the officials of CDA “happy” that is why they were not conducting any operation against the settlement. When contacted, officials of the district administration said the CDA was responsible for conducting operation against the land grabbers. They said the district administration could only provide security to the CDA anti-encroachment teams. When contacted, MNA Akram Masih Gill said only 200 families were allowed to live in the colony in Sector H-9 on temporary basis but the number of the families has increased to 1,000 as people from different parts of the country started shifting here. He said he had discussed the matter with the prime minister but the matter could not be resolved. Meanwhile, some shopkeepers in G-11 Markaz attacked the Capital Development Authority (CDA) enforcement staff, who visited there to launch operation against encroachments in the Markaz.Sources said that some shopkeepers have encroached fronts of their shops and when enforcement staff went there the other day to remove encroachments the traders equipped with rods attacked the staff upon which they managed to flee leaving their vehicle at the spot.Later, traders shifted the vehicle of CDA to Ramna Police Station.Sources further said that shopkeepers had attacked the civic body staff many times whenever operation against encroachments was carried out in the markaz.Meanwhile, illegal parking places outside Jinnah Park and district courts despite “no parking” signboards are causing traffic mess on the busy roads. The motorists expressing their concerns deplored the city traffic police for not taking any action against the unlawful practice that was adding to hours-long traffic jams. They said that Cantonment Board officials too were not serious to resolve the problem and the illegal activity is persisting for long now. The citizens demanded of the concerned authorities to remove the illegal parking places to ensure smooth traffic flow.
