PESHAWAR – More than 600 graduates of the Home Economics were conferred with B.Sc and M.Sc degrees at the 16th Convocation of the College of Home Economics held here at the Convocation Hall, University of Peshawar.

The degrees were awarded to 520 of B.Sc and 110 M.Sc graduates of the session 2008 to 2012. The top achievers of the respective sessions were awarded with gold medals on the occasion as well.

Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rasul Jan was the chief guest of the day and was accompanied by Principal College of Home Economics Prof. Dr. Ghazal Nizam, Dean Faculty of Management and Information Sciences Prof. Dr. Abdul Qayyum and Registrar Dr. Syed Fazl -I- Hadi.

The gold medallists included Bushra Zaman, Nashish Hina, Mashal Jan, Syeda Kausar Rehman for grabbing top position in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Hina Khurshid, Rana Taskeen, Saima Rehman Safi, Farah Deeba and Aisha Shafi were awarded with medals for standing first in M.Sc Home Economics of the session 2008 to 2012.

The lifetime achievement awards were given to Prof. Nuzhat Dar (Retd) for her thirty three years service in the College of Home Economics and Zubaida Zulfiqar (Retd) for her outstanding contribution among the faculty staff.

“Home Economics has an important place in the educational system today and no other academic discipline incorporates in its curriculum as many pertinent skills, which will help students succeed in their career,” said Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rasul Jan in his convocation address.

He added there is no doubt in his mind that females have maximum impact on social and economic decision making within the family.

The College of Home Economics, he said, has not only produced highly accomplished daughters, wives and mothers but young and successful professionals for around six decades.

The Vice Chancellor urged upon the students to turn their graduating day into a day of resolve to utilize their potential and earn good name for themselves and the country by marketing their innovative Professional Home Economics skills.

In his her annual performance report, principal Prof. Dr. Ghazala Nizam said the college has started the International Journal of Home Economics in 2012, which is the first of its kind on the subject in the country. She added the college is offering education from F. Sc to the Ph.D while the first batch of BS four years Home Economics would pass out in the coming year.

The Principal said College of Home Economics is the stand alone institution in the country to have offered M. Phil and Ph. D studies in the profession and presently 24 M. Phil and 17 Ph. D students are enrolled in it. She added all the five departments in the college that is, Management studies, art and design, Human Development, Textile and clothing, food and textile are equipped with highly qualified staff and linkage programs with various industries and SMEDA are underway to market our products.
