LAHORE - Former Pakistan cricketers extended their heartiest felicitations on the national team’s convincing victory over arch-rivals India in the crucial Asia Cup match.

Talking to The Nation, former pace bowler Sarfaraz Nawaz said that it was Pakistan players’ all-round performance which helped them score significant victory. “All the players played very well and especially the knocks of Hafeez and Afridi were worthy to watch. But they should have won the match a bit earlier as they needed 17 runs to win on 17 balls. But they are famous for their leniency which mostly cost them dearly so they must change this approach and try to be more responsible.”

He elaborated: “It is good that all the players contributed well in the team’s win but it is unfortunate that we did not have a good finisher yet. Our players though play well yet they are unable to prolong their innings till the end of match bringing their team home successfully. They lack this quality to larger extent while on the other hand, India as well as other teams have quality match-finishers who helped their teams finish the match well. ”

“As far as the performance in this match is concerned, I will appreciate them which they really deserve and I also congratulate them on their well-deserving triumph. I would also give credit to PCB chairman Najam Sethi whose arrival in the cricketer board proved very lucky and Pakistan snatched very vital victory. I hope Sethi will keep on working for the betterment of cricket and bring it to greater heights,” he asserted.

Sarfaraz also lauded the appointment of Rashid Latif terming him a man of principles. “The appointment of Rashid Latif in the cricket board will help weed out corruption and fixing from Pakistan cricket as he is an anti-fixing person. He must work on merit and find out fresh and promising talent which may help the country in earning laurels.”

Ex-Test cricketer and king of spin Abdul Qadir said that the credit of Pakistan team’s impressive win went to captain Misbahul Haq who led the team very well and registered a critical win against India. “The entire team performed well but the performances of M Hafeez, Shahid Afridi, Sohaib Maqsood and M Talha were worthy to be praised.”  One of the Pakistan cricket legends and noted former captain Inzamamul Haq said that such a thrilling contest between the two neighbouring countries was witnessed after a long time and the victory of green shirts made the entire nation proud. “Every player contributed well in the team’s win and this team work will help them clinch the Asia Cup title once again.”

Former cricketer M Yousaf though congratulated the team on their triumph over India yet he was not much happy with the performance of the team as he said that they could win the match with utmost ease if the middle order batting played their due role when it could have mattered the most. But at the last moment, the way Afridi did, it really appreciable which brought smiles on the faces of sports loving people.”

Former cricketer and coach of Pakistan U-25 winning team Sabih Azhar said that being a Pakistani and a cricket lover, he was very happy with this great performance of national team. “I congratulate all the team members and entire nation for this crucial victory. The victory is result of team work and every player contributed well and played its due role to down arch-rivals India. The green shirts must continue this team work and try to keep on this winning spirit and win the Asia Cup for the nation of sports lovers.”
