UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN chief Ban Ki-moon made a strong plea Friday in support of "free, secure and independent" media around the world in a message to mark World Press Freedom Day. "A free, secure and independent media is one of the foundations of peace and democracy," he said on the eve of the World Freedom Day. Saying attacks on press freedom were "attacks against international law, against humanity, against freedom itself," the Secretary-General deplored the fact that journalists were "increasingly being targeted around the world" and that such crimes were not "thoroughly investigated and prosecuted." He called on "all societies to spare no effort in bringing to justice the perpetrators of attacks on journalists."
