LAHORE Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hasan has expressed concerns over the government plans to privatize WAPDA, saying the rulers were destroying national institutions one by one. In a statement issued on Wednesday, he said that having minted billions from the RPPs, the rulers were now bent upon liquidating WAPDA which seemed to be a conspiracy to make out a case for the import of electricity from India although the countrys power generation companies had the capacity to generate 20,000 megawatts. The JI chief said that the electricity bills had already gone above the limits of the common man and WAPDAs privatization would not only lead to further increase in power tariff but also end up in massive unemployment. The rate of the electricity generated by the RPPs was estimated around Rs 42 per unit, he said. Meanwhile, Secretary General Jamaat-e-Islami Liaqat Baloch has said that the federal cabinet decision to give most favourite nation status to India and expanding trade ties would undermine the countrys solidarity besides ruining its economy. In a statement issued on Wednesday, he said that the PPP government had deceived the political parties and the nation once again. Baloch said the cabinet decision was a continuation of Pervez Musharrafs policies and it was in conflict with the unanimous resolution of the All Parties Conference and was bound to create more hurdles for the solution of the Kashmir issue. He said the government had been holding APCs and promising review of the foreign and internal policies but it was never sincere in the implementation of the APC decisions.
