LAHORE Senior Federal Minister Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi has decided to send the urea price raise case to the Competition Commission of Pakistan. He took this decision during a meeting at State Guest House on Wednesday, which was attended by Chairman, Managing Director and General Manager of the National Fertilizer Corporation and Advisor to Prime Minister on Industries Mohammad Basharat Raja. Pervaiz Elahi said action was being taken against fertilizer manufacturing companies for unilateral increase in urea prices, saying that the case was being sent to the CCP and other government institutions concerned. The meeting, after evaluating in detail the impact of urea price escalation, reached the conclusion that price increase by fertilizer manufacturers did not tally with ground realities and it was a well-planned move of profiteering. The meeting further concluded that fertilizer manufacturers were acting like a cartel, which was detrimental to the interests of the farmers. The meeting also expressed displeasure over the conflicting prices of similar products being produced by the fertilizer companies. Chaudhary Pervaiz at the end of the meeting said that the government would protect the farmers interests at any cost.
