While the rest of the world was celebrating their victory against polio on international polio day, three more children in Pakistan became victims of this crippling disease. This made the total number of reported cases this year 220. Figures also show that 80% of the total world polio cases are from Pakistan. FATA and KPK have highly affected areas. Poor security condition, lack of active anti-polio campaign and absence of awareness among people is aggravating the condition. Deadly attacks on lady health workers are also fueling the resurgence of polio.
Horrible situation demands collaborative and coordinated efforts at every level to save our children. Launching a fresh and efficient anti-polio campaign and using all resources to eradicate the menace is the needed. Government, religious scholars, tribal elders, health workers, parents and entire society will have to play an active role in this regard.
