Minister rules out food crisis

LAHORE (APP) - Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Mohammad Gondal has said if the population is increasing, per acre yield is also increasing. A seminar on highlighting concern about food shortages in Pakistan was held under the auspices of a local newspaper and Auriga Group here at a local hotel on Saturday. He said that no food crisis was about to come as land of the country is fertile and people were fully utilising its potential. He said, We should strengthen their confidence and provide them with resources so that they could put in their best to increase agriculture production. He said practicing good agriculture systems could be a better solution to meet any food problem. He said there was no alarming situation regarding food and added that in developed countries the ratio of suicides was much higher than that of Pakistan so it was wrong to say that people were committing suicide due to hunger. He said there were other reasons behind the incidents. He said recent floods had brought destruction at vast scale and added, We have to convert this disaster into an opportunity. He said the government was taking all possible steps to cope with such situations. Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Kh who was the chief guest at the seminar said that a food crisis would badly affect the masses adding that strong policies were needed to handle the situation. He said, We should make farmers of our country prosperous by providing them incentives. Former Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan, former Punjab Food Minister Ch Mohammad Zaka Asharaf and others also spoke.
