MARDAN Prominent religious scholar, psychiatrist and Vice Chancellor of Islamic University Swat, Dr Farooq Khan was killed along with his attendant at his clinic by unidentified armed men here on Saturday. Police and eyewitnesses said that he was killed when he was taking rest after lunch at his clinic situated on Mardan-Swabi Road, when two unidentified armed men entered the clinic and one of them went straight to his room and opened fir on him. However, the other accused stayed along with the door outside his room. The attendant identified as Saleem Khan intervened to thwart the murder bid, but the alleged killer also opened fire on him, which left Dr Farooq and Saleem Khan seriously injured. They were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), where they were declared dead. The news of the death of Dr Farooq, who have been appointed as Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University Swat, spread swiftly and people started coming to his home in Sector D Sheikh Maltoon Town (SMT). Dr Farooq was born in 1965 in Akbarabad Nava Kali, Swabi. His father Akbar Khan was a headmaster. In student-life he joined IJT. He remained an active worker of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). In 1986, he shifted from Swabi to Mardan. He did his specialisation in psychiatry from Austria. Later, he resigned from his job and started his own clinic in Mardan. In 1993, he participated in the elections from NA-9 from the platform of Pakistan Islamic Front but he could not succeed in the elections. Later, differences had emerged between Dr Farooq and JI. He also remained general secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for sometime. However, at the end he distanced himself from the politics. He wrote several books. The name of his last book was Jihad and Qital. He has also translated the Holy Quran into Urdu. Currently, he was busy writing the Tafseer of the Holy Quran. He delivered many lectures against terrorism. Dr Farooq has left behind two sons Waqas and Usama and two daughters. His wife Dr Rizwana Farooq is also a doctor. Currently, she is in America with her younger daughter. According to eyewitnesses, two people who had small beard entered the guise of patients and killed Dr Farooq at 1:25pm. The servants and neighbours of Dr Farooq said he was a very nice person and had no enmity with anyone, even he did not use harsh words against anyone. His funeral prayer was offered at 8:30pm in Sector D Park. Large number of people attended it. His Qul will be held in Sector D, Sheikh Maltoon Town on Monday.
