Islamabad - Breast cancer awareness campaign for 2014 was formally inaugurated at the NORI Islamabad by Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Secretary Foreign Affairs, here on Thursday. 

All the Oncologists of NORI and eminent professors of surgery, gynecology and radiology from the twin cities attended the ceremony. Prominent social worker and President Pakistan Green Task Force Dr Jamal Nasir also graced the occasion and applauded the efforts of NORI and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in cancer treatment and awareness.

DR Humera Mahmood, Consultant Onologist NORI, mentioned that breast cancer is the common cancer in Pakistan. It constitutes 33 per cent of all cancers in females and 17 per cent overall. According to WHO statistics globally the risk of developing breast cancer is one in every four women.

She stressed on the fact that in Pakistan more than 60 per cent of breast cancer patients present with advanced disease due to lack of knowledge and certain social and cultural taboos.

Dr Mohammad Faheem, Head Oncology NORI, talked about fortunate aspect of breast cancer , as it is one of those cancers, which are not only curable but can also be prevented by change of lifestyle.

He emphasised that early detection and treatment of breast cancer are very important to control this devastating disease.

Early detection is possible with the help of screening.

Director Medical Sciences PAEC Dr Fayyaz Ahmad said that not only treatment facilities but also breast cancer screening services, including clinical breast examination and mammography are available in all cancer hospitals of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.

Director NORI DR Javaid Irfan told that NORI cancer Hospital Islamabad has been providing dedicated breast cancer screening services since 1996. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. NORI Islamabad is regularly organising this campaign.

This year under the auspices of NORI Patients’ Welfare Society (NPWS) and Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology (PSCO) NORI is celebrating October, as breast cancer awareness month so as to disseminate information about causes, prevention and treatment of breast cancer and to show solidarity with those who have already suffered from this disease. Women will be provided free consultation and screening services from October 1 to 31.

Mini symposia will be arranged throughout the month and a mega event will be organised on October 25, 2014. The event will be attended by more than 300 women from different walks of life and both medical and non-medical students. During this month, many dignitaries will join NORI to fight against breast cancer . The seminar will be followed by a walk against breast cancer

Dr Kashif Iqbal, Consultant Oncologist NORI, emphasised on the role of Multidisciplinary tumor boards in proper management of cancer patients.

Chief Guest Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry Secretary Foreign Affairs highly commended the services of PAEC in general and NORI in particular for providing excellent services and individualised care to suffering humanity. Later, he formally inaugurated the campaign of breast cancer awareness month at NORI.
