MULTAN

The town is faced with the serious threat of dengue outbreak as over 39 cases have so far been reported during two days (Thursday and Friday) at Nishtar Hospital, health sources disclosed. At least 29 patients were brought to the hospital with suspected dengue infection on Thursday while another 10 came to the Nishtar with the same symptoms on Friday, sources added.

The DCO Zahid Saleem Gondal said that a robust drive to kill the dengue mosquito larva had been launched across the district while constant fumigation was also conducted at the areas under the threat of dengue attack.

The health authorities have declared Multan the second district after Rawalpindi that is at high risk of dengue outbreak. Although the district government had declared dengue emergency on September 23 after 18 cases of dengue were reported from different areas of the town, the virus attack further intensified.

The District Coordination Officer (DCO) Zahid Saleem Gondal had told the journalists that Multan had been declared a high risk district in view of sudden outbreak of dengue and the health and other concerned departments had been directed to adopt practical measures instead of doing paper work. He said that all district departments and towns had been issued order to carry out survey of entire city, clear all ponds and fill all hatcheries of larva with soil.

The DCO was of the opinion that the fear of growth of larva had increased due to rains and the provincial government had issued direction for launching of anti-dengue campaign on emergency grounds. He said that the joint teams of health department and towns were carrying out survey of all graveyards, schools and other spots to launch fumigation drive and protect the lives of citizens.

He revealed that emergency had been declared at all hospitals and separate dengue wards had been allocated. He warned that strict action would be taken against the departments exhibiting negligence in dengue drive. The DCO directed the police officials to take legal action against the owner of the property if dengue larva was found at his place.
