It has been reported that the rental power plants (RPPs) would cost 13 cents per unit of electricity in 2009, which is equated to Rs 10.79 per unit cost. Over the next five years, working on a 10 per cent depreciation of rupee the cost would be Rs 17.35 per unit. With 22% line losses, it would jump to Rs 21.24 per unit. If oil goes back to $ 150 per barrel from $75 at present, the price in rupees would escalate to Rs 45.45 per unit in 2014. Would this price of power be affordable for us? -DR M.
