NHA's mega emergency plan

ISLAMABAD While the flash floods have badly damaged road infrastructure in the country (that will cost over Rs9 billion to repair), National Highway Authority (NHA) along with Asian Development Bank and the World Banks is making an 'emergency plan' for reconstruction of important roads. The initial assessments suggested that around 1000 bridges and over 400-km of roads had been damaged, which would cost over Rs9 billions to repair. Both National Highway Authority (NHA) and NESPAK have almost finalised the need assessment of road infrastructure in the country and only some parts of Sindh remain. The emergency plan is being chalked out to repair some of important roads links which submerged in the flash floods, official sources told TheNation. In the emergency plan, sources said, important road links including Karokoram Highways submerged part would repair on priority basis. The need assessment finalised by both the authorities would soon be submitted to the Planning Commission. Sources informed that the emergency plan to repair important roads of the country would be finalised within 10 days. When contacted, NHA Chairman Ch Altaf confirmed the formation of emergency plan in collaboration with ADB and WB. It may be mentioned here that as per initial assessment in KP, 260-km of roads and 15 bridges were damaged. In Punjab, 88-km of roads and seven bridges were damaged, while in Sindh, 139-km of roads and two bridges were affected. In Balochistan, 20-km of roads and one bridge was damaged and 150-km of roads and 10 bridges were damaged in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. According to the reports still many roads are closed for traffic due to continuing waterflow. Gilgit-Skardu Road has been opened for light traffic, he said giving road situation and added that traffic was still not moving on the road due to floodwater on the road at Basera (Souther Punjab). Mansehra-Naran-Chillas road is open for one-way traffic and landsliding was still occurring there. Work on main bridges at Batakundi (at km 138) and Barwai (at km 150) is in progress, however temporary detour has been provided for light traffic. At Singum (at km 220) the temporary bridge has also been washed away and road is closed for traffic. Ahead of it, the road is closed for traffic (at km 221-223) and traffic is being re-routed through Batuka Nala, a provincial road of Northern areas. Kotri-Kashmore road (N-55) is submerged under 8-10 ft water (at Km 400-431) due to breach in Thori dam and traffic is still suspended. Sukkar-Jacobabad Road (N-65) is also under water at a portion of 06 kms (at km 46-47 and at km 61-64) and road is closed for traffic Indus Highway Traffic is suspended on D.G. Khan side where a bridge is damaged on Kashmor-Ramak Section and the restoration work is badly hampered due to fresh wave of flood water. In Balochistan, Jacoabad-Sibi-Saryab (Quetta) road Dera Allah Yar By pass is closed for traffic due to overtopping of floodwater on the road at a height of 2ft.
